Orion Expeditions Cruises Kimberley

A ten-night Orion cruise expedition in the Kimberley region of Western Australia typically begins in the Northern Territory capital city of Darwin and ends in the pearling town of Broome.  At the end of your Kimberley cruise you’re sure to want to sign on to take the trip in reverse from Broome to Darwin!  That old Australian phrase, “no worries”, is the only thing you need to remember as you leave your cares behind on the harbor foreshore.

Spend the first day of your Kimberley Expedition Cruise exploring Darwin, once populated with crocodile hunters and cattle pioneers.  Rebuilt after a devastating cyclone in the 1970s, Darwin is now a bustling metropolis with the vast Australian outback and Kakadu, Australia’s largest National Park, right on its doorstep.  As part of your expedition, take a tour on a pear lugger boat and explore the harbor by scuba diving, sea plane or hovercraft.  If all that sounds like work, get away from it all with a days fishing.

Orion Cruises to Kimberley

Leaving Darwin, your Orion Expedition Cruise with Orion Australia will travel across the Timor Sea to East Timor and the resort of Com.  Enjoy a day excursion, then board again for a full day at sea as you return to the Australian coastline and Wyndham.  You can take a flight over the unique Bungle Bungle Range in Purnululu National Park, drive inland to the frontier town of Kununurra, or enjoy a boat ride on the Ord River to Lake Argyle.  From here your expedition adventure truly begins.

Enjoy the fine cuisine and entertainment on your Orion cruise ship and wake up to arrive at Koolama Bay.  You will travel up the King George River, with its stunning, sheer canyon walls and breathtaking waterfall at Gardner Plateau.  You may choose to take an excursion hike to the top of the falls.  After these natural wonders, get into the Aboriginal culture at your next stop, Vansittart Bay.  Going ashore, you travel by Zodiac – an expedition ship - to Jar Island, on the way to rock formations and the 17,000 year old rock paintings at Gwion Gwion Gallery.

The next day will see you arrive in rain forested expanses.  While the Orion cruise ship waits at Prince Frederick Harbour you can take the Zodiac to explore the beaches and, if you choose, further inland on foot through the pristine bush to Mitchell Falls & Plateau.  See the spectacular landscape and eucalyptus forest from above on a helicopter ride.  Your next destination at Montgomery Reef is for wildlife spotters – the reef is buzzing with life and attracts predators that feed on it, such as egrets, sandpipers, sea turtles, reef sharks and other large fish.

On the last day of your Orion Expeditions Cruise in the Kimberley take a dip in the freshwater Crocodile Creek.  Arriving to Broome, you will disembark and sample the town.  Learn about the pearling history of the town, or follow a self-guided trail through Minyirr Park.  Take a hovercraft to Gantheaume Point to see the 130 million year old Dinosaur Footprints, or sit back and enjoy the unequalled view from Paspaley Pearls Boutique.
