What you need to know before booking your cruise

Regardless of what you enjoy doing on your holiday there is a cruise out there just tailor-made for you!  Those who love Art, History and Architecture should consider a Mediterranean cruise, which will take you to places like Rome, Florence, Athens and amazing Istanbul, where you can immerse yourself in the treasures of antiquity.  If you prefer exploring the underwater wonderland, good choices for your cruise holiday would be cruises to the South Pacific islands, Caribbean or the East coast of Australia where you can visit the Great Barrier Reef.  Those of you who prefer things a little cooler should head for the Norwegian Fjords or Alaska, Iceland and Greenland.  There are even special themed cruises available such as Celebrity cruises’ Immersive Wine Cruise (calling at several wine growing destinations in France and Spain), Bird and Nature cruises to the amazing Amazon and the Galapagos Islands

When it comes to cabin (or stateroom)selection, there are also many options ranging from Suites with separate sleeping and living areas (and private butlers!) to the more regular staterooms which all have a shower/toilet en-suite and are very well appointed and comfortable.  For hot-weather cruises a balcony stateroom is great to have, but ocean-view and even inside staterooms are all fine, considering that you will spend so little time in them.  Mid-ship is the most stable position on board, especially on the lower decks, and a good choice for those who have not yet tested their sea-legs, while the upper decks have the best views.

What should first-time cruise ship passengers expect?

Excitement!  You will never forget your very first cruise experience – it is so exciting to step on board for the first time and explore this vast floating village!  On the days you are in a Port, you can choose to join one of the many excursions offered by your cruise line (do book in advance – the popular excursions are often sold-out before you board) or you can just explore the destination on your own.  Do some homework before you leave – it would be a shame to miss out on seeing something special because you were not prepared!

On Sea-days (when you are not in a Port) you can take advantage of some of the facilities offered – you could hit the gym to compensate for all the delicious food you will be eating, visit the Spa for a relaxing massage or treatment, attend a lecture or watch a movie.  There will also always be a library, internet café, card room, casino and, of course, the swimming pools and jacuzzi. (Even on winter cruises you can relax in the solarium and still enjoy the heated indoor pool on most ships.)  You can do as much for as little as you like and many passengers just love to relax on one of the decks and watch the sea glide by.  You may be lucky enough to see some whales or dolphins following your ship.

Food on board is generally excellent with a choice of self-service buffet style restaurant or the more formal dining room where you can enjoy superb food and wine.  Most ships also have speciality restaurants, pizza bars, coffee shops and more!  (Food is available all day…and there is even room-service.)
